Release of Open Science Policy Austria

In its Open Science Policy, Austria commits to the Open Science movement and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). FAIR data is mentioned as one of the principles and core tasks.

In February 2022, the Open Science Policy Austria was adopted in the course of a joint presentation to the Council of Ministers by the BMBWF, BMDW and BMK. With this presentation to the Council of Ministers and this Open Science Policy Austria, Austria is committed to the Open Science movement and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The vision of Open Science is to make scientific processes more open and effective and to use both scientific excellence and open innovative and applied research to address current challenges, which are very comprehensively presented in the Policies of the EU Commission and in the framework of the Global Sustainability Goals (UN SDGs).

Principles of the Austrian Open Science Policy

The Austrian Open Science Policy is based on the international principles of Open Science and sees the core missions in these fields:

  • Rewards and incentives
  • Research indicators and next-generation metrics (research evaluation, evaluation metrics)
  • Future of scholarly communicatio
  • European Open Science Cloud (EOSC)
  • FAIR data (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable)
  • Research integrity
  • Skills and education
  • Citizen science

Commitments

In agreement with this policy, Austria is committed to:

  • Publication of scientific and research data based on the FAIR principles
  • Participation in European (EOSC) and international Open Science
  • Open Access – access to publicly funded publications
  • Open Educational Resources (OER)
